Details for Item # 0988Gen. Winfield Scott Presentation 1836 Johnson Flint Pistol       Sold Go Back

Very interesting deluxe inscribed “Gen. Winfield Scott” U.S. 1836 Johnson dated 1837, .54 cal., 8-1/2” barrel. Engraved barrel and mountings with silver plating over the iron parts, fancy grained wood. This gun is in overall very good condition showing approx. 90% of the original silver plating. There is extensive and patriot motif engravings including the spread eagle, scallops and fancy florals, banners and symmetric bursts; the name “Gen. Winfield Scott” is prominently featured on the center top portion of the barrel. The bore is very good, the action crisp, the wood is very good, and has only scattered scratches and nicks from storage; on the left side of the stock. On the side plate is the stamping “Birmingham CT.” I believe that Birmingham CT is where this gun was engraved for this presentation. Accompanying this unique and historical pistol are two brass and two bronze commemorative medals celebrating General Winfield Scott; one a Congressional resolution related to his participation in the battles of Chippewa and Niagara; two medals of a resolution of Congress dated March 9, 1848 for his Mexican War service and one medal from the State of Virginia commemorating his service as Commanding General of the U.S. Armies. from 1841 to 1861, longer than any other General has held that position. He was the Commander of the Army from before the Mexican War to the start of the Civil War. He ran for President unsuccessfully for President against Franklin Pierce. Scott's list of accomplishments and history is much too long to detail here. Also included are four leather bound books two are Historically significant books he wrote on Military regulations and tactics, dated 1817, 1830, and two from his library personal library both dated 1847 being noted in the front cover as from the General Scott Library. Additionally, there is a large black and white framed and matted engraving of General Scott in uniform, approx. 30” X 24” in overall good condition. Scott wrote the Code of Arms book for infantry. This is a very historical grouping of one of our most famous Generals.
