This is an important and rare VIOLIN Cane. The mahogany tau handle is 3" high and 6 1/2" long Below it is a 3/4" lined nickel collar at which point the handle unscrews. A chamber is revealed that holds a fitted mahogany horse hair bow with an ivory tip. The instrument is opened by removing a 21 1/2" mahogany panel. there are interal ebony seats and a maple sounding board along with an ebony bridge that raises the strings for playing. Set on brass mount, there are four pins for tuning the strings. An antique clock key that fits the tuning pins is carried seperately. This remarkable piece is capable of producing a fine sound when peoperly tuned. There is another band that secures the panel on the mahogany shaft for storage. A 3/4" nickel and iron ferrule completes the piece. The overall length is 37" and the condition is very good. This item was made circa 1865. At a past exhibition of antique musical instruments held at the Museum Of fine Arts in Boston a similar cane violin was displayed. It was attributed to maker Moritz Wilhelm Gloesel, 1829-1927. Violin Canes represent the very top of gadget cane collecting, because they rarely ever reach the market. They are very rare.
